The 370Z now is in its 11th year of production, and it hasn’t changed much since it replaced the 350Z for 2009. With that package and a $140 set of floor mats, our blue test car with a six-speed manual transmission cost $31,805. That’s $1595 less than the starting price of a Mazda MX-5 Miata RF, which is smaller and lighter but packs only 155 horses in its 2.0-liter inline-four.

Strong Six

The V-6–powered 370Z smokes the Mazda in a straight line, hitting 60 mph in 5.0 seconds and covering the quarter-mile in 13.6 at 106 mph. That’s more than a second quicker than the Mazda in both tests (as well as the Subaru BRZ). Incredibly, the 370Z accelerates at almost exactly the same rate as the 300ZX Turbo we tested in August of 1991.

Nissan’s VQ series of aluminum-block, DOHC V-6s has powered the Z since 2002, and versions of that engine have been used in everything from pickups to SUVs and sedans. In the 370Z it displaces 3.7 liters, has an 11.0:1 compression ratio, and spins to 7500 rpm. Power peaks at seven grand, and it makes 270 lb-ft of torque at 5200 rpm.

There’s also plenty of torque right off idle, which makes the Z easy to drive around town. If you’re feeling lazy, you can lug it through traffic in second or even third gear. The six-speed is geared short with tight ratios, so the V-6 never falls off its powerband if you don’t want it to. Even out on the highway at 80 mph in sixth, the engine is revving at more than 3000 rpm. Passing rarely requires a downshift.

Unfortunately, there’s far too much vibration in the shifter and the clutch pedal, especially over 4500 rpm, which keeps the Z’s powertrain from feeling like it was designed in this century. The shifter’s stroke also is too heavy, and, like the clutch, there’s a rubbery quality to its action; we suspect Nissan attempts to dial out some of the engine’s harmonics with sloppy rubber bushings.

In stark contrast to the high-effort shifter is the Z’s overboosted steering, which feels as if it were lifted from a 1980s Cadillac DeVille. You can literally steer the Z with one finger.

Like that of the Miata—as well as the BRZ and the Porsche 911—the Nissan’s tachometer is in the center of the gauge cluster, right where it should be in a sports car. The 370Z also has an oil-temperature gauge, which is unusual these days, and a shift light that starts flashing red at 7000 rpm. Its pedal placement is perfect for heel-and-toe downshifts.

The interior is screwed together well, although the seats could use a little more thigh support, and the base model is thin on features. Missing modern amenities include an infotainment screen and driver aids such as blind-spot monitoring. Our car also lacked the optional SychroRev Match function, which matches engine revs for you on downshifts, was the first such system when it launched on the 370Z for 2009 and is standard on upper trim levels.

Balance and Grip

Z-cars have been laying down rubber on Los Angeles’s notorious Mulholland Highway for five decades. The twisty two-lane, which connects Hollywood to the Pacific Ocean, was a street racer’s paradise in the 1970s, and it’s still a good place to push a sports car. At seven-tenths, the Z can put a smile on your face. The chassis—which is fortified with a three-point front strut-tower brace and a bar across the cargo area—feels solid, even over bumpy bits, and the Nissan’s balance is right despite having 55.2 percent of its 3327 pounds over its front tires.

But push it harder and the 370Z starts to disappoint. Suddenly the suspension, which can be choppy on L.A.’s concrete freeways, starts feeling flaccid, and the Z goes nose heavy with a fair amount of understeer. With its short wheelbase, wide track, and staggered 18-inch summer tires, the Z should have more grip. At the track it generated 0.89 g around a 300-foot skidpad; that matches the performance of the Miata RF, which weighs about 900 pounds less and rides on much smaller rubber. And it’s only slightly better than the 0.87 g that the 300ZX recorded in 1991. Considering the advancements in tire technology alone over the last 27 years, that’s hard to believe.

When you’re really hustling, the Z’s brake-pedal action also goes limp, feeling long and again overboosted. There’s some fade but not enough to be a problem—at least until you take the car to a racetrack. At the test track, the 370Z stopped from 70 mph in 180 feet, which is nine feet longer than the Mazda. Again, this is disappointing considering the Z’s sticky Yokohama Advan Sports.

The Nissan’s open differential is another issue. Turn off the car’s stability-control system and the inside rear tire spins coming out of tight corners. If you want a limited-slip differential in your Z—and you do—Nissan makes you step up to the $3730-pricier 370Z Sport, which also brings bigger brakes and 19-inch wheels.

Replacing the 370Z does not seem to be in Nissan’s future product plans any time soon. As far as we know, work has not yet begun on a seventh-generation Z-car. In the meantime, the long-awaited reintroduction of the Toyota Supra, developed in partnership with BMW, is just around the corner.

Just Exactly What Isn’t Needed

Chevy already has five crossovers and SUVs in its lineup, ranging from the wee little Trax up through the Equinox, Traverse, and Tahoe to the stupefyingly large Suburban. General Motors will rightly brag about how the Tahoe and ’Burban dominate their markets, the Equinox and Traverse are gaining market share, and that the Trax does something or other. The new two-row “Blazer” slots into the narrow space between the Equinox and Traverse, one never before recognized by Chevy. Call it the mid-mid-size, mid-midrange crossover segment. Or call it Chevy’s version of the GMC Acadia. Your choice.

What’s obvious is that Chevrolet didn’t need the “Blazer” as much as it needed a chance to pick up some sales in a segment occupied by the Ford Edge and the Nissan Murano. Okay, the Blazer is what it is: a mainstream crossover. Here’s what to know about it. It is good-looking, with the nose capped by a grille that seems as if it migrated over from the Camaro ZL1, the wheels pushed out to the corners so there are barely any overhangs, and every body panel featuring some interesting sculptural element. Of the now six Chevrolet crossovers and SUVs, this one is the most daring, if such a word can even be uttered in reference to an SUV.

Of all the other crossovers out there, perhaps the one the new “Blazer” resembles most is the Lamborghini Urus. You decide which of the two is flattered by that comparison.

The basic structural bits are in fact shared with the GMC Acadia and the Cadillac XT5. The new Chevy will be built at GM’s plant in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico. It’s a five-passenger hauler with both rows offering decent room and well-shaped seats. And in the sports-like RS trim, the interior features bursts of color in the upholstery and along the dashboard that manage the neat trick of being both startling and kind of elegant. The less flashy Premier trim is subdued enough that it may as well be an Equinox.

The standard powerplant is the familiar 193-hp 2.5-liter inline-four. More attractive is the equally familiar 305-hp 3.6-liter V-6. Both engines are directly injected, and both feed a nine-speed automatic transmission that can, in turn, feed an all-wheel-drive system. Fuel-economy estimates haven’t yet been revealed, but they should be a bit better than the Acadia’s since the GMC currently uses a six-speed automatic.

Lower-spec Blazers will come standard on 18-inch wheels. Flash a few more bucks and those wheels grow up to 21 inches in diameter, which will impress many, many neighbors. With all the LED lighting and the aggressive-ish styling, finding the right balance between visual dignity and blinding ostentation will be an options-sheet challenge for Blazer buyers.

Chevrolet hasn’t announced pricing yet since the Blazer won’t hit showrooms until early 2019. Expect it to be fully competitive with similar machines, though, because GM actually wants to sell these things.

Technodazzle

Monster Mudder tires and metal dashboards were virtues back in the full-size Blazer’s run, from 1969 to 1994, but now the world wants smartphone integration, backup cameras, and sensors that throw off enough radar waves to irradiate the nation’s almond crop. The new Blazer has six USB ports, a glovebox that snaps open electronically, and all sorts of lane-keeping equipment available. The electronic trick list stretches to include a wireless charging pad, a hands-free liftgate, and a trailer-hookup guidance system, among a few other things, but none of this is surprising in this current environment. Tech is expected. And tech is what the 2019 Blazer offers.

Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda

Jeep can’t keep Wranglers in stock, the Toyota 4Runner has experienced an amazing sales renaissance, and Ford is about to bring back the Bronco. The Blazer name should be on a truly capable off-roader like those beloved machines. Why is Chevy letting this opportunity slide by?

Chevrolet has heretofore done a pretty good job of keeping a philosophical handle on its heritage nameplates. Corvettes are still all two-seaters with fiberglass bodies. The Camaro is, as always, a rip-snorting muscle pony even when it’s powered by a V-6. The Blazer ought to be, once again, Chevy’s true off-roader, something that looks awesome covered in mud.

Frustratingly, there’s even a product in Chevrolet’s extended family that would make a true Blazer. That’s the Brazil-market TrailBlazer, which shares much of its engineering DNA with the Colorado pickup truck. Bring that thing up, call it the Blazer, and call this one the Vue or the Lumina APV or something.

Ironically, 2019 is the 50th anniversary of the first Blazer. It’s a name that inspires affection in those of us who admired the original—and even the smaller S-10 versions. And there’s a real passion among us oldsters who drove them both when they were new and when they were decades-old beaters. There are rivers and lakes and big open spaces that call for a real Chevy Blazer to go find them. This “Blazer,” no matter how good a crossover it might be, isn’t that Blazer.

Price

We expect that the starting price of the next Chevy Blazer will be roughly $27,000, enabling the full-size, second-generation 2018 Chevrolet Traverse to slightly move upmarket and become several thousand dollars more expensive.

Platform

We expect the next Chevy Blazer to ride on the GM C1 platform shared with the 2017 GMC Acadia and 2017 Cadillac XT5. The long-wheelbase version of this platform will underpin the 2018 Chevrolet Traverse and 2018 Buick Enclave.

We can see how Buick could have you fooled, though. The GS looks fast. Even the regular Regal—dubbed Sportback on account of its sloping rear hatch and vestigial trunk lid, which are shared with the GS—starts out lithe and sleek. If Buick assumed that Audi’s use of (but failure to trademark) the same name for its similar A5 Sportback might get people talking about the two cars in the same sentence, well, that’s just good marketing. And so long as that conversation stays focused on matters cosmetic, the Buick and the Audi can safely cohabitate within its clauses.

That wouldn’t have been possible had Buick—and Opel, the German brand that GM just sold to the PSA Group yet that still builds the Regal and sells its own version of it called the Insignia—not kept the GS’s detailing restrained. A small red GS badge floats inconspicuously in the grille, and the larger front intakes, GS-specific 19-inch wheels, and red-painted Brembo front brake calipers don’t overshadow the Regal’s sensational shape.

With its 3.6-inch-longer wheelbase, extra 2.7 inches of overall length, 0.7-inch-lower roof, an additional 0.2 inch of width, the Buick feels significantly larger inside than its predecessor. Behind the roomy rear seat lives a 32-cubic-foot cargo hold, which can be expanded to 61 cubes by laying the 40/20/40 split-folding rear seatbacks down flat. For reference, Buick’s largest two-row crossover, the Envision, stores 27 and 57 cubic feet, respectively. We only wish the GS had a power-opening mechanism like the one on the Regal TourX station wagon’s tailgate. Burdened by the huge rear window and that dummy trunk lid, this car’s hatch is a heavy lift.

So, too, is the GS overall. While this Regal is 202 pounds lighter than the last all-wheel-drive GS we tested back in 2014, its curb weight still nears two tons. By comparison, a front-drive, four-cylinder Regal Sportback we tested was 394 pounds lighter.

Buick makes life even harder for the GS by fitting the standard Sportback with the turbocharged 2.0-liter four from the previous-generation Regal Turbo and GS models. Making 250 horsepower, the four-pot scoots a front-drive Regal to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds, quicker than Acura’s 290-hp TLX and Toyota’s 301-hp Camry. In the fight between the GS’s substantial mass and its 60-hp boost over the Sportback, the engine loses. Despite the advantage of an all-wheel-drive launch, this sportiest Regal is only 0.2 seconds quicker to 60 mph than its Sportback sibling.

The top Regal’s mass also dulls its performance edge when deviating from a straight line, where its road-crushing heft makes the car feel inert. Wearing the same Continental all-season tires as the Sportback we tested (but on one-inch-larger wheels), the GS merely matches that car’s good but not great 0.87-g showing on our skidpad. It also needed a couple extra feet to stop from 70 mph.

At least the GKN-sourced twin-clutch torque-vectoring rear differential isn’t fluff. Though also offered on the base Regal and tuned less adventurously than it is in Ford’s Focus RS, the diff keeps torque steer at bay by overdriving the Regal’s outside rear wheel to help direct the car through turns. But exploiting this capability requires the driver to stomp on the gas mid-corner. Pass this test of will and the corrective tail yaw suppresses understeer for a time. It creeps back in during long sweepers as the stability control reins in the throttle, and the low-grip all-season tires succumb to a use for which they were never intended.

The GS isn’t an extravagantly improved Regal, which is sort of okay given how composed the base car drives. It’s just false advertising. We were expecting more—more performance, more handling, more yuks, especially considering that Buick tosses in adaptive dampers and three drive modes: Touring, Sport, and GS. The latter two firm up the suspension and produce quicker and more frequent downshifts from the transmission.

Regardless of its drive mode, the Regal remains true to its easygoing baseline tune even as it delivers slightly sharper responses. There’s just a small nod to the sporty side with each button press. This is a rare bit of technical subtlety that we can’t help being impressed by, despite our overall disillusionment with the car. Such detail work deserves praise in this age of endlessly adjustable, never-quite-right computerized chassis.

Lacking paddle shifters seems like a sin, even in light of the GS’s relaxed nature, though the nine-speed transmission’s second and third gears are so tightly spaced that you can’t avoid the fuel cutoff during the 3–4 upshift when toggling the shifter yourself. Left to its own devices, the GS skips third altogether under full throttle to avoid any redline-to-redline hiccups.

Also disrupting the Regal’s cohesive chi are its ambitiously bolstered front sports seats, which appear to have fallen off a truck headed for the Corvette’s Bowling Green, Kentucky, plant. The chairs’ faux cutouts for racing harnesses look ridiculous, though the seats are comfortable and have standard massaging, heating, and ventilating functions.

For $39,995 to start, the Regal GS is a roomy, premium-ish mid-sizer that’s comfortable letting Audi and BMW keep their customers. Its interior feels adequately upscale for its price. And given that the GS tops out at just over $46,000—about the same as Acura’s six-cylinder TLX SH-AWD A-Spec—it’s a good value, too. As long as you’re clear that this is simply a good-looking Buick with a V-6 and not a frisky sports sedan.

Which Buick Regal Model Is Right for Me?

The 2018 Buick Regal Sportback comes in five trims: 1SV, Preferred, Preferred II, Essence, and GS. A wagon variant, called the TourX, has three trims: 1SV, Preferred, and Essence. A turbocharged four-cylinder engine comes standard in all but the GS, which is equipped with a V6. For Sportback models, front-wheel drive comes standard, and all-wheel is available in the Preferred II and Essence. All-wheel drive is standard in the GS and all TourX trims.

Regardless of whether you choose the Sportback or TourX body type, the Essence is the trim to go for. Its luxury amenities include leather upholstery and heated front seats. You’ll also have access to a host of advanced safety features, multimedia upgrades, and other convenience niceties.

Buick Regal 1SV

The base trim starts at $24,990 for the Sportback body style and $29,070 for the TourX wagon body style. It comes with a 7-inch touch-screen infotainment system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a USB port, a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot, push-button start, proximity keyless entry, a rearview camera, Teen Driver, and heated exterior mirrors. There are no available packages with this trim.

Buick Regal Preferred

The Regal Preferred ($27,670 for Sportback, $32,670 for TourX) adds power-adjustable front seats with driver lumbar support and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

Unlike the base trim, the Regal Preferred offers several packages. The Driver Confidence Package I costs about $1,245 and gives you blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning, rear parking sensors, and LED cornering headlights. The Sights and Sounds package adds remote start, an eight-speaker Bose audio system, navigation, an 8-inch touch screen, satellite radio, HD Radio, and a 4.2-inch driver information display.

Buick Regal Preferred II

Starting at $29,770, the Regal Preferred II is only available as a Sportback. It has an 8-inch touch screen, satellite radio, a 4.2-inch driver information display, dual-zone automatic climate control, remote start, a heated steering wheel, fog lights, ambient lighting, and 40/20/40 split-folding rear seats (replacing the 60/40 split found in the lower trims).

Like the Preferred trim, the Preferred II offers the Driver Confidence Package I. In the Preferred II, it costs $1,080 and comes with wireless device charging. For the Preferred II, the Sights and Sounds package includes an eight-speaker Bose audio system, navigation, and HD Radio.

Buick Regal Essence

The Buick Regal Essence starts at $31,770 for the Sportback and $35,070 for the TourX wagon. It comes with leather upholstery and heated front seats.

For an extra $1,580 (Sportback) or $1,725 (TourX), the Driver Confidence Package I adds all the same optional safety features from the lower trims plus memory settings for the driver’s seat. Alternatively, the Driver Confidence Package II ($1,090 in Sportback, $1,190 in TourX) gives the Regal a slew of safety features not available in the lower trims. They include adaptive cruise control, the following distance indicator, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, and lane keep assist. Contents and pricing of the Sights and Sounds package remain the same as in the Preferred II trim.

Buick Regal GS

Building on the Essence trim, the naturally aspirated Buick Regal GS ($39,070) comes standard with a V6 engine, all-wheel drive, and Brembo brakes. You’ll get many of the safety features from the lower trims, including lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and front and rear parking sensors. The GS-specific sports seats are heated and ventilated. They also have memory settings and a massaging function. You’ll also get a flat-bottom sports steering wheel and metal gas and brake pedals.

For $485, the Appearance package adds wireless device charging and LED cornering headlights. The Driver Confidence Package II is $1,690 in the GS. Contents and pricing of the Sights and Sounds package remain the same for this trim.

As the mid-size offering in BMW’s popular crossover X-series, the X5should be expected to function as an upscale family hauler while also delivering the brand’s signature driving satisfaction. Unfortunately, its skills are more closely aligned with the first mission than the second, something we’re hoping BMW rectifies with the all-new model that is set to debut for 2019. In the meantime, buyers of the current X5 will appreciate its well-tailored cabin, velvety gasoline engines, intuitive iDrive infotainment, and above-average fuel economy. Several rival crossovers from Japan, America, Germany, and Sweden provide similar qualities for less money, however. What’s New for 2018?

BMW tweaked the X5’s eight-speed automatic transmission for 2018 and made paddle shifters standard on the plug-in hybrid xDrive40e model. Both gasoline-powered 35i and diesel-burning 35d models receive new trapezoidal tailpipe finishers, and nonhybrid X5s with the M Sports package can be upgraded to 21-inch wheels with performance run-flat tires for $1550.

Trims and Options We’d Choose

Of the X5’s four powertrain options, we’d go with the silky-smooth and plenty powerful 3.0-liter inline-six—badged as the 35i—and we’d stick with the rear-wheel-drive sDrive model. It’s offered in three different styles: xLine, Luxury Design, and M Sports Design. Because the latter starts $4350 higher than the other two, we’d skip it, but we would add the Premium package for $1150, as it gets:

• SiriusXM satellite radio with a one-year subscription
• Four-zone automatic climate control
• Keyless passive entry

Apple CarPlay is available for $300, and an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot and wireless smartphone-charging pad are bundled for $400. As equipped, our X5 sDrive35i comes in at $60,045—a princely sum—but has many standard luxury features that its rivals offer as optional equipment. Of possible interest to those who live in the Snow Belt, the all-wheel-drive xDrive35i model costs $2300 more.

Engine and Transmission Rating:

A turbine-smooth gasoline-powered inline-six, a brawny V-8, an environmentally friendly four-cylinder plug-in hybrid, and an efficient diesel inline-six make up the X5’s quartet of turbocharged powertrains. All X5s come with a slick-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive, except the gasoline-powered inline-six, which gets rear-wheel drive standard and all-wheel drive as an option.

Over the past two years, we’ve sampled all-wheel-drive examples of the gasoline-fueled 35i, 35d (d for diesel), and 40e plug-in hybrid models and all of them delivered very similar performance at our test track. The fleet-footed xDrive35i sprinted from zero to 60 mph in 6.0 seconds flat, tying the similarly powerful Volvo XC90 and Acura MDX. In the real world, all of the X5’s powertrains provide more than enough power to quickly merge into traffic, and they’re smooth and refined while doing so.

Charging System

The X5 xDrive40e plug-in hybrid can charge at either a 120-volt or a 240-volt outlet. A full charge requires seven hours on standard 120-volt house current but less than three hours on 240 volts.

Interior and Passenger Space Rating:

Admittedly, the X5’s cabin isn’t the poshest or most stylish in the segment, but it’s a comfortable and (mostly) accommodating space that’s lined with well-chosen materials and features. For those who need a third row of seats, there are far better options available; we’d suggest you move on to something more spacious.

Interior Space Comparisons

The first and second rows will be spacious enough for most passengers, but third-row space will be cramped even for little kids. BMW doesn’t provide head- and legroom measurements for the dinky optional third row, but we managed to squeeze ourselves back there, and—judging from our experience—it’s not worth the $1700 price.

Exterior Design and Dimensions Rating:

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and around these parts, we can’t decide if the X5 is stylish or passé. Dimensionally, the X5 is more compact than rivals, but it still casts a sizable shadow.

It’s difficult to call something the size of the X5 compact, but in comparison with its rivals, it’s the shortest in length and also the narrowest, making it ever so slightly easier to maneuver it into tight spaces.

Infiniti’s gigantic QX80 SUV is simultaneously a good deal and overpriced. At $66,045 to start—$69,145 with all-wheel drive, as on our test car—it ranks on the affordable end of the scale for beefcake, luxury-class three-row SUVs. The GMC Yukon DenaliCadillac Escalade, and Lincoln Navigator cost thousands more. Even the smaller Mercedes-Benz GLS-class, entry-level V-6 and all, costs $70,545.If there’s a rub, it’s that you can buy essentially the same SUV for even less money. Stroll over to your nearest Nissan dealer, and you’ll find the Armada, which is mechanically identical to this Infiniti, listed for as little as $47,385 (itself a relative deal among nonluxury SUVs such as the Chevrolet Tahoe and the Ford Expedition). Both trucks are based on the Nissan Patrol sold in other markets and share the same 5.6-liter V-8 (the QX80 gets 10 more horsepower and 19 additional lb-ft of torque, for totals of 400 and 413), automatic transmission, switchgear, and general interior styling. The Armada Platinum model’s interior is the QX80’s near twin, and it includes most of the Infiniti’s standard and optional toys. So Why Buy?

While it appears that the Armada has thrown a wrench into the QX80’s breakfast cereal, we’re here to tell you it hasn’t. Instead of thinking of the Infiniti as an overpriced Nissan Armada, think of the Armada as an underpriced QX80. That’s because most of the Infiniti’s competitors are gussied-up versions of lesser SUVs, while the QX80 feels every bit like a $70K-and-up vehicle.

The QX80 is massively better-looking on the outside, particularly after the model’s refresh for 2018. Materially, the Infiniti’s cabin is a pleasant place to be, particularly with the Deluxe Technology package found on the example we tested. For $5700, it nets a 15-speaker Bose audio system, heated and cooled front seats, a Hydraulic Body Motion Control suspension (more on that later), adaptive headlights, and quilted leather seats. A Dignified Beast

Lightly weighted (and, predictably, entirely numb and overboosted) steering with a relatively quick-feeling ratio augments the Infiniti’s perched-on-its-axles sensation while helping to mask its considerable size with fleet changes in direction. It’s neither nimble nor confidence inspiring, but neither is anything else in this class excepting only the 10Best–winning Mercedes-Benz GLS-class. At least it doesn’t feel as if you’re piloting the S.S. Infiniti.

Typical big-beast traits such as a squishy, inconsistently responsive brake-pedal action (although a 175-foot stop from 70 mph for something this big ain’t bad) and a heightened sense of body roll in turns (just look at our meager 0.70-g skidpad-grip figure) don’t mar the experience much. The QX80 still feels lighter on its feet than, say, an Escalade. Partly, this is due to our test car’s optional Hydraulic Body Motion Control. Besides being part of that $5700 package, the suspension system resists body roll by means of hydraulics and without the use of conventional anti-roll bars.

With its four-wheel independent suspension, the Infiniti’s ride, too, is generally good, unlike most similarly sized behemoths that use live rear axles. (The other independent rear suspensions in this class belong to the Expedition, the Navigator, and the GLS.) There’s no ignoring the huge wheels, though. Initial impact sensations over bumps can be abrupt and cause some wheel flutter (the wheel bouncing quickly before being tamed by a damper), an affliction that surely could be mitigated by avoiding the $2800 22-inch wheel package on our test car. Fetching as those rims are, sticking with the standard-issue 20-inch wheels likely would bring more forgiveness.

We’re particularly fond of the QX80’s big, naturally aspirated V-8 engine, which builds power linearly and sounds incredible when the go pedal is pressed to the floor. It hustled our three-ton test vehicle to 60 mph in a quick 5.9 seconds—comparable to an Escalade. The seven-speed automatic transmission is similarly satisfying, exhibiting no ill behavior and smartly delivering downshifts when necessary. Better still, the QX80 is a refreshingly straightforward get-in-and-go affair, with no driving modes to choose from; there is only a well-considered baseline tune.

Beastly Is as Beastly Does

The Infiniti’s major issues are typical of this segment, which generally suffers from poor passenger and cargo space relative to the huge external dimensions. As with its competitors, the QX80’s seating gets less comfortable the farther from the dashboard it’s located. The front seats are cherry; our test vehicle’s second-row captain’s chairs were mounted too low in spite of the QX80’s copious headroom (a three-across bench that increases passenger capacity from seven to eight is available for $250); and finally, the third-row seats are as incarcerating as any in an Escalade or an Expedition. Similar to the short-wheelbase General Motors SUVs of this size, the Infiniti’s cargo hold behind the third row is weak, measuring a sedanlike 17 cubic feet, and the liftover height is back-straining.

We continue to take issue with the woefully outdated infotainment system shared with much of the rest of Infiniti’s lineup. Controllable via touch—a far reach for both the driver and the front passenger—or through a fiddly click knob perched high up on the dashboard, the infotainment screen’s menus are downright awkward to navigate and suffer from pixelated, low-res graphics. Infiniti scatters shortcut buttons to key menus and even secondary audio controls (which, thankfully, include volume and tuning knobs) between the control knob’s perimeter and the rest of the center stack.

Taking into account the low-resolution, dot-matrix driver-information screen in the gauge cluster, the QX80’s display game seemingly is as last-century as its fuel economy. We averaged just 12 mpg over the course of our test, and even on our 75-mph highway fuel-economy loop, the Infiniti could muster only 17 mpg.

Given its class-average practicality and infotainment issues, the QX80 shines best the less you spend on one. Maintaining its base-price edge over competitors isn’t hard to do, even without abandoning the must-have $2900 Driver Assistance package (blind-spot monitoring, automated emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control) fitted to our test car. Skip unnecessary stuff like the $2800 big-wheel package, $2450 rear-seat entertainment package (your kids have iPads, right?), $465 illuminated door sills, and $425 welcome lighting, and you’ll drive away with a properly luxurious barge for well under the $85,460 spent on the QX80 pictured here. And when you look at it, you won’t even think about a Nissan Armada.
